Time to sum things up, although it's not a wrap quite yet.

After four years in Australia my visa expired so I moved from Australian summer to Swedish winter in February.

Australia is fairly remote to… most places. So I did some travelling.

LA
I had an exhibition in Los Angeles and met up with photography friends. It was probably the best trip of the year.

Shot a wedding in LA, my first actually. It was featured at Rock’n’Roll Bride.

NY

Stockholm
I went to Stockholm and photographed singer songwriter Elina in Dear Euphoria. The photos were published in the book Vägen till Sångerna by Stefan Warnqvist.

Elina and I also worked together on another project. Her voice and my images in a video that was screened at Slideluck Stockholm.

Swedish midsummer

Shot a beach wedding, featured at Ever Ours.

and another one featured at Once Wed, a bridal blog with over 3 million readers/month.

Longed to get back into the studio and photographed beautiful African top model, Mirash during Stockholm Fashion Week.

Sketch Magazine
Had some spreads in the Australian Magazine, Sketch Magazine.

Biggest gig of the year was with fashion designers Alpha 60, for Sportsgirl Australia. It was printed on postcards and in stores all over Australia.

Won a silver award at the Australian Professional Photography Awards 2010.

Went to Copenhagen and met my artist friend Hilda Ekeroth and photographed her exhibition.

Paris
Went to Paris and met one of my best friends, who was in Paris on honeymoon.

Moved into a studio space in Stockholm by the end of September. Love it.

I won three bronze awards at the International Aperture Awards 2010, in three different categories, people, wedding and illustrative. The one in illustrative below:

Sometimes you ask me about lighting so I thought I would share some photos.

Two heads lighting the background, bouncing into the polyboards, mostly to avoid camera flare.

The main light is a Beauty Dish with reflector and the second light is a Balloon. A beauty dish is probably my favourite light source, besides ambient, when it comes to portraits. It gives a beautiful fall off, eg. this shot (top one). The balloon is completely underrated but gives an amazingly soft light. I use it a lot for beauty shots.

The combination of a beauty dish and a balloon isn’t typical I guess, but I find using just a beauty dish will be too harsh for a fashion shoot. Big soft boxes are easy and reliable, but can give a too flat light. It depends on what you shoot of course.

International Aperture Awards 2010

I entered three prints in the International Aperture Awards 2010. One in people category, one in wedding and one in Illustrative.

Wedding

I kind of new that the wedding shot would work. It scored a bronze award, only a point under silver award, so maybe a tiny bit disappointed.

People

Judges always like crisp photos and most of this image is not (effect), although the subject is. I wasn’t surprised that it didn’t get as high scores, but still a bronze award.

Illustrative

I have been very close, but never got any awards in Illustrative before. The competition is usually murderous in that category.

The print I entered is probably one of the strangest images I have ever done. I haven’t even posted it here, because I couldn’t decide if I liked it or not. I honestly had no idea how it would be received in a competition; it’s probably an image you like or dislike.

I got a bronze award and the same score as the wedding image, one point below silver.

I have previously won a silver award in the Australian Professional Photography Awards 2010 with another version of the image.

I am of course very pleased with three awards out of three prints. And there is always next year.

I’m so proud of him.
Liam McIntyre is one of three actors vying for the lead role in Spartacus. Of course I hope he will get it.

The photos below are taken the first time I met him. It was winter, freezing and we shot a film noir series outside in an alleyway. He was modelling with another model and from memory I took these in between shots.

We went to a fabulous Halloween party last year. Oh how I love costume parties.

I just got back from the studio and have more work to do tonight. But I’m really excited about a fashion shoot tomorrow morning. The model is absolutely amazing with long red curly hair so I’m pretty sure we will get some cool shoots out of it.

This week has been all about fashion. Shooting a SS2011 for a Swedish fashion designer and attended a couple of showroom events.

Another event, or a screening really, was Slideluck Potshow Stockholm earlier this year. Some of my images were shown, music by Dear Euphoria. You can see the (very compressed) video here.

Vägen till sångerna, a book about Swedish singer-songwriters, arrived in the mail a couple of days ago. Stefan Warnqvist, a well-known music journalist, wrote it. And it is the first time anyone has thanked me in the foreword. Gold!

Dungen, Taken by Trees, Timo Räisänen, Elin Sigvardsson and Dear Euphoria are a few of the musicians that are interviewed in the book.

I have photographed Dear Euphoria, aka Elina Johansson, a couple of times before and some of my photos of her are published in the book.

Vägen till sångerna is published by BTJ and available at most (Swedish) bookstores, amongst others at Adlibris.

Materially Embodied

Hilda Ekeroth and I met eleven years ago when we studied together at the University of Lille, France. We were both young, it was the first time we lived abroad and our French was perhaps slightly less fluent than we had expected.

It seemed impossible to find an acceptable place to stay in the occasional bureaucracy French society. We looked at some truly odd and mouldy studios, one where you had to walk through the men’s room at a bar to enter the staircase up to the studio. Clearly not an option.

Exhausted, I asked the receptionist at the hotel of any advice. He shook his head and said “do you know that Lille has the third highest crime rate in France?” He placed a map on the desk, grabbed a pen and then put a big black cross over EVERY central suburb except one. He wrote down an address to a real estate agent in the uncrossed suburb, Madeleine, made a call and voilà, with my parents signature I moved into a, perhaps not elegant, but charming apartment.

Hilda was more courageous and moved in to a sweet little room in a well, let’s just say, not quite so sweet suburb. We became friends but I haven’t seen her since France. Eleven years ago.

It was great seeing her again in Copenhagen last week. She is currently doing her fifth year at Royal Danish Academy Of Fine Arts and Materially Embodied is her first solo show. I think the series is absolutely beautiful. Materially Embodied is on at Gallery Fifth Floor, Istedgade 136, Copenhagen.

Vägen till sångerna (the road to the songs) is an anthology with interviews of contemporary Swedish singer-songwriters written by Stefan Warnqvist. A discussion about their work, influences and creative process are brought together into a book including discographies and photos.

Dungen, Taken by Trees, Timo Räisänen, Elin Sigvardsson and Dear Euphoria are a few of the musicians that are interviewed. Some of my photos of Elina Johansson aka Dear Euphoria are published in the book.

The annual Australian Professional Photography Awards, APPA, was held in Melbourne last weekend and it’s always nice to attend the event and catch up with other photographers. Unfortunately I missed out this year being overseas.

It has been a busy few months moving to Europe, to get the entire logistics happening as well as shooting and travelling.

There is a Slideluck Screening in Stockholm tonight at Delight Studios. Slideluck is a New York City based organization founded in 2000 by advertising photographer Casey Kelbaugh.

I have work in the Stockholm show, an underwater series accompanied with music by Elina Johansson. Admission fee 100sek and there will be food, treats, drinks and afterparty.

The new issue of Sketch Magazine was launched a couple of days ago and sold out immediately. More copies are being reprinted, so at the moment I can’t show you any of the work.

Secret doors of Melbourne

I woke up early, packed the camera bag and went for a walk a couple of days before I left Melbourne. I lived in CBD and walked around the familiar lanes, photographing some of the cafés and bars.

St Jeromes used to be one of my favourite spots, but they closed down last year. The owners opened up a new place, Sister Bella. It’s not the same, but still a sweet afternoon café, perfect to sit and work with your visual diary on a rainy day.

Murmur, between Elizabeth and Queen, has the most competent and friendly bar imaginable. Also, grab a Pizza at Il Portobello downstairs. Yum.

Along Lonsdale Street you have The Emerald Peacock, Seamstress and Manchuria (cocktail bar). A slightly more elegant cocktail bar is Comme off Collins St.

Centre Place is always busy, filled with tourists and small cafés. Grab some fabulous pumpkin curry upstairs at Hell’s Kitchen.

AC/DC Lane a few blocks up from Hosier Lane is gritty Cherry, often with local acts. Same feel as Pony. You just wont get in here with a collar. On the other hand, you couldn’t get in to Arthur’s next door without one. (Currently only open for private functions)

Meyers Place is a good place to start if you're looking for a night out. Lily Blacks is a popular yet a slightly more quiet bar. I’ve had a “the first date” here. And going away drinks once. Cross the street and dance the night away at Loop.

Just a block away is Madame Brussels and their English country look, with fake grass, waiters in tennis shorts. Works best as an afternoon bar, located at a rooftop. PS. The lift is always broken.

Double Happiness is another little favourite bar, located at Liverpool Street. This one can be tricky to find (red glass doors) but oh so worth it. Get a Mr Foo, a cocktail with chilli vodka, lime, coriander and ginger.

Croft Institute

Impossible to find unless you know where it is. Some photos I did for Croft 2 years ago.

Section 8

In 2006, I studied graphic design just around the corner so we went to Section 8 a lot, for lunch, for drinks and for long conversations all night long.

It didn’t use to be busy, but it is now, but it is one of my favourite spots in the afternoon. Just sit back on one of the crates, start working in the visual diary and enjoy a drink. They have Melbourne’s best vodka, lime and soda.

Don't miss Cami Shanghai Dumpling & Noodles next door. It's kind of gritty but the food is great. And cheap.

365 Things You Can Do

365 saker att göra means 365 Things You Can Do and the project was initiated to inspire people to become more creative. Everyday a new text and photo is published and I was asked to contribute as a guest writer last year when the site was launched.

The project was a great success in Sweden and recently won the Swedish blog of the year. Due to its popularity 365 has been translated to English. I just noticed that the text I wrote last year had been translated. If you like, you can read it here.

Care for a swim?

I grew up in the south of Sweden and although it easily gets -10 degrees in winter, it normally doesn’t snow much. Most of the time it is mostly wet and muddy in winter.

This year it has been exceptionally cold and something has happened that I have only seen twice. The sea has frozen.

It’s my last night in Melbourne. I have lived here since 2006 but my visa expires and I have to go.

I have finished packing and the apartment feels empty and silent. Looking out over the city and I’m feeling a bit sad. I love this place.

It’s a 26 hours flight in the morning to Europe, 10 hours shorter than last time so I’m lucky.

I look forward seeing family and friends in Sweden. It is more than a year since I saw them last time. Can’t wait really, but now, right now, I feel mainly sadness of leaving a place that feels like home.

This is home, but it’s time to build a new somewhere else.

It has been a busy year. It was my final year at the photographic course at RMIT. It was also a lot of fun and I met so many new lovely people this year, stylists, hair-stylists, photographers, make-up artists, artists and models.

I had my first show of the year in July and exhibited an underwater series – Let It Fall that I photographed back in Sweden last Christmas. It didn’t quite make it to the final in Projections, but was given a highly commended in the art category.

The second show, the graduation show at Eckersley’s Gallery in November was intended to be the last show, but then there was Hogan Gallery this month. It was kind of unexpected but I was happy to be a finalist in portrait in Edge Photo Imaging Awards.

This series was one of the beauty shoots I enjoyed the most this year.

In June I went up to Sydney and the APPA Awards. It is the highlight of photographic events of the year and AIPP (Australian Institute of Professional Photography) arranged seminars, cocktail parties and award dinners. It was so much fun and I was very happy for my 2 silvers in portraiture.

The top photo was part of a photojournalist series I did of a contemporary dancer. I got to hang out in the dance studios every week and I absolutely loved it.

I also got a new website.

I look forward to 2010 and there will be a lot of changes in my life next year. Enjoy the last hours of 2009 and see you in 2010. Happy New Year!

Finalist in The Edge

I was just told that I am a finalist in the Edge Photo Imaging Excellence Awards 2009.

It is a portrait of stand up comedian Magesh, also well-known Australian drummer.

The images will be on display and the category winners will be announced tomorrow at the awards night (Tuesday 15 Dec), at The Hogan Gallery, 310 Smith Street, Collingwood. The function starts at 7 pm.

You have certain fashion stores you just love and Alpha 60 is one of them, with shops in Sydney and Melbourne. I had a portrait assignment at RMIT and contacted the Melbourne based design duo Georgie and Alex Cleary at Alpha 60.

I went to the design studio with my assistant to do a location portrait and we started to set up lights. Alex grabbed a shirt from one of the many hangers in the studio and came back a couple of minutes later with the new shirt on. I wish I could do the same.

Gallery review - Let It Fall

An art student at the university contacted me and asked if he could interview me. He, Mitchell, needed to write a review of an exhibited set of works currently on and he told me that he liked to write about mine. And he did:

What is the purpose of photography? Are photographs merely two dimensional reference materials from which we identify people, objects and places of the past – tools that tell us details of our world indifferent to human sentimentality? Or do they posses within themselves individual interpretations? Can they offer us more? Can they disarm our sensory control and ignite within us feelings that challenge our rational thought and grant us the kind of experiences often submerged under the silence of dreaming?

These are some of the questions that you may find yourself thinking after viewing Melbourne based Photographer Annevi Petersson's series Let it Fall, currently on exhibition at The Brunswick Street Gallery.

The twelve photos are hypnotic, involving the expressions of movement detained underwater, elegantly captured using only muted blue colours. They are haunting and dramatic without being overdone and mysterious in the way each shot has been captured without being overbearing. They are all simply numbered and are hung in a grid formation rather than side by side, which surprisingly works well without making them seem too cluttered. Although this is the case, sadly the space given to this series isn't near enough; each individual image could easily command an entire wall, more likely giving the viewer an even better appreciation of each.

Photographs like 8 and 12 cleverly use illusion which completely de-rails the viewer’s sense of distinction between underwater and the surface. Annevi has also very effectively hidden the features of the face so as not to distract from the complete composition, where in some, the difference between the reflection and the actual body become less identifiable. The narrative by Annevi, written on the plaque next to the photographs is simple yet powerful, acting almost as a meditation, guiding the senses to fully absorb the almost overwhelming experience silently pulsating within each photograph.

Annevi's ideas and technique with this type of photography is certainly unique and while there are no obvious influences for the Let it Fall series, some links may be seen in the underwater work of contemporary artists like Narelle Autio and Trent Parke. Annevi said she was interested in the dying Ophelia mythology, with the Let it Fall series exploring instead the idea of Ophelia fighting and choosing to live. While some may see the photographs as being too dark, Annevi sees them as being the complete opposite saying the series is a journey "from the darkness, stillness and despair, to the fight, attitude and courage to live and also the joy of life".

Annevi has said of her work that she doesn't "like to tell what the reader or audience is suppose to feel; I think that is very much to insult the reader. What I hope to do is to create a mood, a feeling that stays with them that they can reflect upon.” This is a real strength, especially for works like Let it Fall, because you do not necessarily need to understand the metaphoric, mythical or even existential overtones in order to enjoy the simple beauty of each photograph. Good advice would be to first read the narrative, then allow yourself to be absorbed by the pictures, to feel weightless with them and in that moment, leave the world behind.

I met stand-up comedian Fox Klein for the first time at charming Misty bar a couple of years ago when he did his solo show during the Comedy Festival.

This year all his shows sold out instantly at the Comedy Festival. He signed a contract with an American production company and will be moving to Beverly Hills next month.

Australia’s best

I went to the galley opening to the portrait show Head On at the Australian Centre for Photography in Paddington. I think the show has outgrown its venue; everybody was there, well except the winners. The standard of work was sensational and well worth a look.

Another inspiring photography exhibition is the Moran Prizes at State Library.

But the show I enjoyed the most was Narelle Autio’s The Summer of Us at Stills Gallery. I have admired her underwater work for a long time and the new show is full of humour and life. Narelle exhibited for the first time at Stills Gallery in 2001 together with her husband, Trent Parke (Australia’s only Magnum photographer) in the show The Seventh Wave. I love the existentialistic feel of the photos, classic really. I was fortunate to meet both of them, so talented and friendly people.

This is my first photoblog, although it is not my first blog. I study commercial photography in Melbourne and I am currently doing my last year. I have worked in advertising in Stockholm and as a language teacher in a French university. So here I am, at the end of my photography course trying to put it all together.
